Since that time, according to records found in the camp 54,890 men and over 10,000 women were held prisoner here. In the 14 month period preceding 20 April, 1945, 14,000 inmates died from exhaustion undernourishment, mistreatment and various diseases. The prisoners worked in stone quarries and a nearby Messerschmidt Airplane Factory. On April 20, 1945, 15,000 inmates including children and elderly people, were marched away. Those that could not keep up the march were killed by the wayside. About 2,000 were left in the camp when U.S. troops arrived. Among those reported to have been in the camp are Kurt Von Schuschnig, former Chancellor of Austria, Leopold, King of Belgium, Prince Albrecht of Austria and Hjalmar Schacht, Reich Minister of Finances. This photo collection consists of 61 pictures. Each picture is accompanied by a caption written by the soldiers of the 97th Division of the U.S. 3rd Army.; height: auto; zoomable:false; draggable: false">

alt="These are barracks where German S.S. troops who supervised the Flossenburg Concentration Camp in Germany, lived. 800 German S.S. troops were in charge of this camp which was opened in 1939. 3rd Army."

When troops of the 26th Infantry Division, Third U.S. Army, captured Schwarzenfeld, Germany, April 22, 1945, another story of Nazi murder and atrocity was revealed. The Americans discovered that many hundreds of helpless persons, including Allied prisoners-of-war and Polish Jewish slave laborers, had been shot in cold blood by Nazi SS troops, and their bodies thrown into a mass grave. The executions took place on the day before the American forces captured the town. After making official record of the circumstances, U.S. Military Government officers ordered local German civilians to exhume the bodies and provide coffins and a civilized burial for the victims. Schwarzenfeld is 47 miles east of Nuremburg and 28 miles west of the Czechoslovakian border.; height: auto; zoomable:false; draggable: false">

alt="THIRD U.S. ARMY DISCOVERS NAZI ATROCITY. Schwarzenfeld is 47 miles east of Nuremburg and 28 miles west of the Czechoslovakian border."
